Activity Breaks on Hadrian's Wall

Sitting on the rolling foot hills of the North Pennines, overlooking Hadrians Wall, The Borders and Kielder Forest and in close vicinity of both the Sustrans 72 and 68 routes and two National Trails, the Hadrian’s Wall Path and the Pennine Way, we are ideally suited for offering extensive activity breaks from Bush Nook.

Recent trail and forest access development in the North East of Cumbria, alongside the extensive Sutrans routes allows potential cycle outings from an easy 22 miles to extensive loops of 70+ miles.

All the routes are on quiet country roads or forest tracks, can be accessed from your base at Bush Nook. The opportunity to cycle in such a wealth of history, culture and natural environment is an opportunity not to be missed.

We can offer advice and bike hire for self-managed or provide personal support for accompanied outings to explore the total experience of this wonderful area.

There are also a wonderful selection of trails and quite tarmac roads offering many miles of great running in fresh air, through open countryside with extensive views. You can mix and match trails and tarmac to give you miles of interesting outings.

There are many interesting and rewarding walks in the area. The scenery is stunning and just waiting to be explored. From your base here we can direct you on several loop walks that allow you to leave your car at home and have a truly environmentally friendly day out.

The Roman Wall makes spetacular walking country! You can walk the entire length from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway or simply choose to walk the best bits - and most of them are close to Bush Nook!!

The South Tyne Trail - some wonderful sections of this walk can be accessed within 4 or 5 miles of Bush Nook.

RSPB Geltsdale Reserve - this fabulous reserve can be accessed with 10 mins of Bush Nook, a number of short of long walks to suit families are available.

The Greenlee Lough walk is a 7.5 mile trek and joins both a section of the Pennine Way and Hadrian’s Wall Trail, as well as leading you through the Greenlee Lough National Nature Reserve, where wildfowl and waders are to be spotted in the bog and grasslands.

Many of the routes are family friendly e.g. the circular Steel Rigg and Sycamore Gap walk.

There are also plenty of shorter, easy routes, like the Thirlwell Castle Walk, from Greenhead, 2 miles in length and features only gentle inclines, making it a good choice for young families.
